This role is expected to lead the enterprise’s new business efforts focused on Major League Soccer, which is home to 22 clubs and continues to grow its influence in the domestic and international sports community. In addition to securing new, strategic marketing partnerships for the League, this position will be responsible for leading a team that collaborates with and impacts business for clubs, media partners and other SUM properties.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Meet or exceed annual revenue goals for the League, its associated media and the Business Development team’s greater responsibilities for other SUM properties: including, but not limited to the U.S. Soccer Federation, Mexican National Team, CONCACAF, etc.
  • Take a team sales approach and collaborate with department counterparts to close new business and achieve collective goals
  • Develop deep, meaningful relationships with national decision makers at brands that lead to long-term partnerships supporting the aforementioned properties and other strategic priorities for the League and greater SUM enterprise
  • Manage a team to deliver strategic sales presentations and tailored business solutions to senior-level executives at prospective clients and agencies, while incorporating media, integrated platforms and other benefits into such opportunities
  • Engage and manage the enterprise (other departments, property constituents, MLS clubs, senior management, etc.) to close deals that deliver value beyond monetary benefit
  • Engage key departments throughout the sales process; including but not limited to Partnership Marketing, Integrated Media Solutions, Commercial + Property Development, and Legal
  • Negotiate sponsorship deals from conversation inception to final contract
  • Provide day-to-day oversight and take a team sales approach with Manager(s) and Coordinator(s) to help those individuals meet and exceed annual performance goals
  • Develop personal growth opportunities for employees under this position’s management


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 10-12+ years of experience selling complex, integrated marketing rights and media platforms in sports sponsorship industry


Required Skills

  • Ability to take a client through the entire sales funnel, from lead generation to closing
  • Proven track record of meeting/exceeding annual 7-figure sales goals
  • 100+ existing “decision maker” brand contacts at national level and agency relationships
  • Ability to navigate and collaborate with counterparts in other functional areas including Other departments that require meaningful interaction include Marketing, International / Events, Media, Digital, Club Services, Competition, Consumer Products, Finance, and MLS Canada
  • Self-starter, but team player with the ability to work against both aggressive individual and department sales goals
  • Superior business and negotiating skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Superior organization, project management skills and attention to detail
  • High level of commitment to quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance
  • Ability to manage hiring and onboarding process by interviewing, selecting, orienting, and training employees when applicable
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Ability to travel and to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays


Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of the Spanish Language (business proficiency)
  • Knowledge of the sport of soccer, and specifically MLS
