Overview

The Vice President, Player Engagement will have a highly impactful new role at Major League Soccer leading a new department.  The Vice President will create and execute the strategy for player development and engagement during the player lifecycle, including rookie development, ongoing player training and engagement, career transition services, and retired player support.  The successful candidate will assist players in adjusting to life on the field, while challenging them to prepare for their next career after retirement.

 We are seeking a strategic, innovative and energetic leader who will build and deliver best-in-class training strategies and programs for our players. You will demonstrate deep functional expertise as well as business savvy, serving as an influential advisor to players, business leaders and club partners alike.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute a strategy to ensure the success of MLS players both on and off the field including:
    • Compliance training on topics such as sexual harassment, diversity & inclusion and code of conduct.
    • Life skills training for new and existing players
    • Targeted career transition programs for players near retirement
    • Development of support networks and programs aimed at maintaining communication, networking and well-being for players transitioning into retirement and beyond
  • Develop opportunities for players to engage with the league, to build a positive and lasting relationship throughout their professional careers and beyond
  • Proactively identify potential issues and resolve with appropriate programs
  • Establish clear career paths to align players with growth opportunities within the MLS network, and provide guidance to players regarding career opportunities
  • Manage consultants to create training content and delivery methods
  • Create strategic communication plans, working closely with clubs and players union
  • Oversee department budget and manage P&L
  • Audit training and performance measures to gauge program effectiveness
  • Establish best practices and proactively identify and recommend solutions/programs based on assessment, feedback and data that will positively impact training results
  • Share best practices across the MLS network and conduct ongoing benchmarking against external best practices, including new technologies to ensure programs are cutting-edge and effective.
  • Manage and vet vendor relationships as required.
  • Quickly grasp the essentials of Major League Soccer’s culture, business approach and behavioral standards

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 12+ years of progressive experience in training and program development, risk management and compliance
  • Experience in working with sports or athletic culture

 

Required Skills

  • Deep subject matter expertise in the field of training and development with a demonstrated ability to deliver and facilitate large-scale training programs using various platforms (i.e., instructor-led, e-learning).
  • Knowledge of compliance regulations at the state, provincial and local levels.
  • Exposure to professional athletes and an understanding of the player mindset and culture. International player experience a plus.
  • High level of commitment to quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance
  • Proven ability to provide strategic and tactical leadership to develop and manage complex development and training programs
  • Ability to direct cross-functional teams in a time sensitive environment to implement new practices, programs and procedures
  • Great listener and excellent communication skills, including outstanding facilitation and presentation skills
  • Highly collaborative with strong interpersonal skills to successfully work across the organization
  • Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Superior organization, project management skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, lean organization
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbally
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

 

Desired Skills

  • MBA or Master's Degree in Human Resources Development, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or related field is preferred
  • Experience as a professional athlete
