  • Overview

    The Managing Editor oversees the day-to-day content production, workflow and operations of the league’s official website, mobile web and mobile app, guiding daily content and site production in collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief.  Among the chief responsibilities of the Managing Editor: (1) content ideation, planning, programming and production for site and app; (2) managing, scheduling, assigning, on-boarding and coaching a team of staffers and freelancers; (3) overseeing site/app-specific budget; (4) creating content; (5) assessing content and platform performance metrics.


    • Direct and guide site/app editors and producers to create and publish content, including overseeing all production features like headlines, teaser titles, photo/thumb selections and other content elements to maximize content performance on site and app
    • Leverage all available CMS and web production tools to create the optimal user experience on each and every post
    • Exercise strong editorial judgement across all aspects of the site/app content creation process to guide framing, language and general positioning of stories and sensitive topics
    • Establish strategies and regularly make decisions regarding site and app programming to maximize content and channel performance with the assistance of performance monitoring tools
    • Create and oversee the creation of real-time content around live matches, often held on weekday evenings and weekends
    • Brainstorm, assign and oversee execution of compelling national stories, including breaking stories, related to MLS, its teams, players and matches
    • Create content plans around special events, packages or content series as necessary
    • Monitor local, national and international outlets as well as the soccer social media community, and oversee creation of timely and relevant responsive content
    • Work closely with Social, Video and Graphics staffers to coordinate content creation and distribution, including responsive content, taking every MLS digital platform into account
    • Oversee performance management of senior editor and new media editor staff members
    • Develop and manage a freelance contributor network to provide on-site/match coverage in each MLS market
    • Develop, train, manage and strategically deploy a freelance editor network to provide site/app desk coverage and support
    • Develop, manage and strategically deploy a columnist network to provide timely, engaging and compelling reactions, observations and perspectives on the most relevant topics in the league
    • Cover matches, report and write breaking news stories, commentaries and long-form features, and provide on-site coverage from special events or other access opportunities
    • Create community-focused content, such as polls and photo galleries, triggering deeper engagement from users
    • Work with editors and content producers at MLS clubs and MLS Digital partners to coordinate coverage and share content and best practices
    • Ensure that digital products (app, Fantasy Manager, brackets, etc.) and league initiatives (MLS Works, eMLS, etc.) are seamlessly integrated in content production as appropriate
    • Monitor, identify and integrate innovative trends from the digital and sports content landscape
    • Manage hiring and onboarding process by interviewing, selecting, orienting, and training employees
    • Accomplish team results by communicating job expectations and managing the Performance Management process:
      • Plan, monitor, and review performance;
      • Coach and counsel employees;
      • Develop and implement department procedures and productivity standards and reinforce Company policies

    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • 5+ years of experience editing, writing and producing digital content
    • A high degree of familiarity with the digital media and social media ecosystem, including how content engages audiences on different platforms
    • A proven ability to edit, write and post content within a content management system and across multiple digital platforms
    • Possession of basic HTML and programming skills and the ability to edit images and leverage video and social media content elements to help tell a story
    • Strong, dynamic writer who is a specialist at writing headlines, subheads and captions, while also wearing many editorial hats: copy editor, producer, writer and blogger
    • Capability of working under tight deadlines and prioritizing assignments
    • Exceptional facility for creativity, ideation and a familiarity with the process of proposing and revising ideas to incorporate group feedback and priorities
    • A passion for storytelling: Strong instincts for recognizing a compelling story and identifying the elements that constitute compelling storytelling
    • Demonstrated editorial judgement and general decision-making and problem-solving skills
    • Deep knowledge and appreciation of soccer, specifically MLS
    • Superior organization, project management skills and attention to detail
    • High level of commitment to quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance
    • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment
    • Efficient time management skills and the ability to work under short- and long-lead timelines
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbally
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite

    Major League Soccer is the top-flight professional soccer league in the United States and Canada and began play in 1996, shortly after the U.S. hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Now in its 24th season in 2019, MLS continues to grow at an explosive rate, as the league features record-breaking attendance and consumption, an influx of dynamic players and 20 soccer stadiums. MLS has doubled in size during the past decade and now has 27 clubs, including future teams in Miami, Nashville and Austin that will begin play in the next few years. One more expansion team will be added in the coming years, elevating MLS to 28 clubs.
