Senior Vice President, Business Affairs

The Senior Vice President, Business Affairs will report to the General Counsel and hold significant responsibility in managing the legal and business affairs portfolio for Major League Soccer and Soccer United Marketing. This position will advise senior leaders at the League and club level on a variety of transactional, policy, and corporate matters.


  • Provide high-level guidance and support in legal and business affairs, including negotiating, drafting, and providing strategic advice on complex commercial transactions including those relating to media, consumer products, technology, sponsorship and partner relations, sweepstakes, marketing, and other arrangements
  • Manage and support the development and implementation of policies relating to commercial strategies, sponsorship categories, club partnership arrangements, advertising, ticketing, and other League and club business relationships
  • Serve as a trusted resource to senior leadership and club counsel, advising on a wide variety of business and policy matters
  • Manage league and team corporate and stadium transactions and implementing policies in connection therewith (e.g., ownership transfer, financings, stadium transaction, expansions)
  • Work with and advise a broad range of internal departments in connection with complex business and legal matters
  • Evaluate and implement League policies and practices to ensure compliance with privacy, antitrust, anti-corruption, and other applicable laws and regulations
  • Supervise the management of League and club trademark portfolios on a global basis
  • Support League efforts to protect the League and clubs’ intellectual property, including implementing and enhancing the League’s brand protection, and content piracy programs
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned


  • Juris Doctor
  • 15+ years of experience at a top tier law firm and/or corporate legal department
  • Experience working in the sports, entertainment or media industry is preferred
  • Admission to NY State Bar
  • Ability to build strong internal client relationships and effectively advise senior-level executives under uncertain, high-pressure and/or high-risk conditions
  • Outstanding contract negotiation, drafting and organizational skills; experience drafting and negotiating all manner of contracts
  • Proven experience managing teams of lawyers and para-professionals and multi-tasking under pressure
  • Impeccable judgment and ability to provide smart, practical legal advice
  • Superior attention to detail, organization and project management skills
  • High-level of commitment to a quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity and compliance
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of the Spanish Language (business proficiency)
  • Knowledge of the sport of soccer
  • Ability to travel and to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
