In this newly created role, the Senior Director, Player Well-Being & Clinical Services, is responsible for developing, leading, and managing systems and processes that support and promote the mental health and wellness for all players in MLS, MLS NEXT Pro, and MLS NEXT Academies.


You will have direct oversight of the mental health, clinical strategies and initiatives for the MLS ecosystem player population and create value by your expansive subject matter expertise and deep industry experience to design, lead and deliver integrated mental health solutions and outcomes.

The Senior Director of Player Well-Being and Clinical Services shall serve as the principal liaison between Major League Soccer [“MLS”], Major League Soccer Players Association [“MLSPA”] and MLS Clubs on all mental health and wellness issues. In addition, you will assist the Senior Vice President of Player and League Advancement in the management and performance of a variety of executive, professional and administrative duties, including special projects and programs to support the day-to-day operations of the department.


In this position you will need to exercise discretion and independent judgment in resolving issues with players, Clubs, and administrative staff.



Design and lead Major League Soccer’s well-being and clinical services strategy and operational plan for all players within MLS, MLS NEXT PRO, and MLS NEXT to include but not be limited to:


  • Offering consultation to MLS Clubs in the areas of mental health and athlete behavior
  • Designing tailored solutions to include primary prevention/resilience support, general education/training, problem assessment, resource navigation/case management, and specialty programs.
  • Educating MLS Clubs and players on various issues that impact and intersect with mental health and well-Being, such as DUI, Drug use, Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault, Discrimination, and Dislocation from home and family.
  • Overseeing Player mental health communications strategy and building strong relationships and partnerships across Major League Soccer to enhance overall awareness and visibility of mental health needs to support de-stigmatization and utilization of available resources and programs.

  • Collaborating with MLS Medical team on player health and safety programs as the subject matter expert and interface with MLS Legal team as well as MLS’ Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health consultants as needed.



Additional Responsibilities


Advising and supporting the Senior Vice President of Player and League Advancement and department on a range of items including: 


  • Lead and manage well-being and mental health task forces, and advisory groups as needed
  • Working with internal departments to develop and ensure mental health policies support league initiatives
  • Actively engaging in professional development as industry professional and MLS professional
  • On-site Club relations and managing a portfolio of Clubs as part of the Player Engagement team
  • Proactively interfacing with the MLS ecosystem player population
  • Acting as liaison between players and internal and external constituents (e.g., corporate partners, Clubs, etc.), and work with soccer affiliates (e.g., MLSPA, NCAA, etc.) on programs and initiatives
  • Assisting with strategic planning, operations, budget, contracts, and analytical research.
  • Directing educational initiatives and designing curriculums for players
  • Providing pro-active mentoring, counseling, encouragement, creative problem solving, and crisis intervention for players, coaches, support staff, and their families on a range of issues
  • Representing the organization at meetings, social functions, etc.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by Senior Vice President of Player Engagement



Education and Experience

  • Doctorate degree in mental health field (psychology, counseling, or social work) from an accredited graduate program
  • Independent clinical license
  • 10+ years of experience in training and program development, risk management and/or human resources
  • Experience working in a highly competitive environment with athletes, sports, and athletic culture


Required Skills


  • Deep subject matter expertise in the field of counseling, training, and development with a demonstrated ability to deliver and facilitate large-scale training programs using various platforms (i.e., instructor-led, e-learning)
  • Knowledge of compliance regulations at the state/provincial and local levels.
  • Exposure to professional athletes and an understanding of the player mindset and culture (International player experience is a plus)
  • High-level of commitment to quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity, and compliance
  • Proven ability to provide strategic, tactical leadership to develop and manage complex development and training programs
  • Ability to direct cross-functional teams in a time sensitive environment to implement new practices, programs, and procedures
  • Excellent listening and communication skills, including outstanding presentation skills
  • Highly collaborative with strong interpersonal skills to successfully work across the organization
  • Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Superior organization, project management skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, lean organization
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

  • Knowledge of the sport of soccer
  • Ability to travel and to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
