Overview

The Senior Manager for Medical Operations will provide strategic leadership and medical operations and administration expertise for MLS, SUM, Leagues Cup, and MLS NEXT.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and strategic planning for the medical operation of MLS, SUM, and NEXT events, including but not limited to, contracting with independent contractors, reviewing emergency action plans, and handling event budgets.
    • Collaborate with other MLS departments, such as Operations and Events
    • Liaison with other MLS departments such as MLS Go, Legal, Operations, and Events
  • Primary point of contact for the MLS NEXT Club medical staff
    • Manage MLS NEXT administration of Player record entry and compliance in League  Electronic Medical Records (EMR) including participating physicals and Club record entry
    • Supervise the MLS NEXT on-site operations for marquee tournaments and events
    • Review MLS NEXT emergency action plans
    • Monitor Club compliance with mandatory training and certifications such as Heads Up
    • Attend weekly department operations meetings with MLS NEXT, MLS NEXT Pro, and MLS to coordinate medical operations efficiencies
      • Willingness to travel for extended periods
  • Department representative supporting Leagues Cup initiatives and operations
  • Ability to effectively communicate with various Club and League stakeholders beyond medical professionals (e.g., Chief Business Officers, Legal, Chief Soccer Officers, Events, and Operations Staff).
  • Represent the Medical Department on MLS committees as assigned.
  • Collaborate in developing policies and procedures, including the Medical Operations Manual, In-Market Manuals, Health & Safety Alerts, department memos, and “best practice” development.
  • Stay current with continuing education required to maintain status as a Certified Athletic Trainer.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree in health-related field preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience in an administrative role or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in an elite sports environment preferred.
  • 2+ years of event management leadership in a sports setting

Required Skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbally
  • Ability to work effectively in, collaborative and team-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated decision-making and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with medical records and medical documentation standards
  • Knowledge of emergency action planning, and operational best practices related to the health and well-being of elite athletes.
  • High level of dedication to quality work product and organizational ethics, integrity, and compliance
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Diligent with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, including travel to events
  • Understanding of best practices related to medical records and ability to maintain confidentiality

 Desired Skills

  • Experience caring for elite-level athletes (collegiate, professional, Olympic)
  • Experience with Smartsheets
  • Knowledge of the Spanish Language (business proficiency)
  • Knowledge of the sport of soccer and MLS

Major League Soccer offers a competitive starting base salary of $90,000 – 110,000, based on individual qualifications, market financials, and operational business needs.
