Overview

The Director of Intelligence & Investigations serves as the league’s lead investigative analyst and intelligence strategist, supporting MLS’s mission to provide a safe and secure environment for players, staff, officials, and fans. This role is central to the League’s 'risk-based, intelligence-led' security model, combining investigative insight, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and predictive analytics to anticipate and mitigate emerging threats.

 

The Director will monitor global and domestic events, assess potential operational and reputational impacts, and translate data into actionable intelligence for league and club leadership. This role also serves as a critical liaison to government and private-sector partners, integrating intelligence into daily operations and long-term strategy.

Responsibilities

Intelligence Operations

  • Develop and maintain a leaguewide incident and intelligence database to track fan misconduct, security incidents, and emerging threats.
  • Monitor global and domestic events, social media, and open-source intelligence (OSINT) platforms to identify potential risks to MLS operations, teams, officials, and players.
  • Leverage predictive analytics and trend analysis to proactively address vulnerabilities.
  • Generate regular intelligence briefings, dashboards, and weekly updates for MLS leadership and clubs.

Analytical and Investigative Functions

  • Conduct social network and group analysis related to threat actors and incidents.
  • Perform initial investigations and provide actionable intelligence for response and prevention.
  • Identify trends and patterns to inform policy updates, risk assessments, and resource allocation.

Liaison and Collaboration

  • Serve as the central intelligence resource for MLS Clubs and SUM venues.
  • Maintain strong relationships with domestic and international law enforcement partners, including DHS, FBI, and NYPD SHIELD.
  • Collaborate and share intelligence with other professional sports league counterparts.
  • Contribute to staff training and situational awareness initiatives.
  • Support field deployments as required for major events.

 Additional Responsibilities

  • Serve as a liaison to other sports leagues intel sections.
  • Liaison with law enforcement partners such as DHS and NYPD SHIELD.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management, Business, Analytics or a relevant related field.
  • 8+ years of experience managing Security operations or intelligence-driven investigations within the sports industry.

Required Skills

  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including law enforcement and venue security.
  • Experience producing threat assessments, intelligence briefings, and analytical reports.
  • Skilled in using open-source tools to collect and analyze information.
  • Working expertise in OSInt techniques and experience with OSInt software platforms.
  • Ability to visualize data via tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms.
  • Experience using case management or threat tracking systems to support coordinated intelligence and response.
  • Strong ability to synthesize complex information and communicate it effectively to executive and operational audiences.
  • Strong project management, prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, including presentation to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated judgment, discretion, and commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Flexibility to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and travel for marquee events.

 Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of the Spanish Language (business proficiency).
  • Knowledge of the sport of soccer.

Major League Soccer offers a competitive starting base salary of $115,000 – 150,000, based on individual qualifications, market financials, and operational business needs.
